In 2010, after turning away approximately ninety percent (90%) of females, the organization took the decision to advocate for the establishment of a facility to accommodate this target group.

On the 22nd November, 2012 Republic Bank Ltd, through its corporate social responsibility arm, welcomed the opportunity to partner with VOM in the realization of its dream to accommodate these women by funding the building of the first women’s facility of its kind in the Caribbean.

VOM has established a special committee to treat with this unique target group.

The Women’s Rescue Residence – Laventille

The Women’s Rescue Residence is the brainchild of the President of the organization, Mr. Wayne Chance.

The idea grew out of his many encounters with women who were involved in physically and emotionally abusive, life-threatening relationships.

These women were mothers with nowhere to turn to with their children, thus placing them in vulnerable situations.
It is from theses encounters the residence was birthed to accommodate mothers with their children.

Counseling and Life Skills Sessions (Group and Individual)

Clients meeting informally with their counselors in a familiar setting which encourages them to open up more about issues. We have found these to be therapeutic for both clients and staff.

We realize that inmates upon exiting prison may have a host of different psychological “hang-ups” that may have been in existence before incarceration. In order to adequately address these psychological, emotional and physical needs of both the residents of the In-Transit Centre and the Walk-In clients.

School/Community Outreach Programme

Vision on Mission is actively involved in the communities of Trinidad & Tobago conducting youth intervention programmes. Because of this young people feel connected to the organization and this allows them the freedom to be more open to our counselors and field officers.

Additionally, Vision on Mission receives numerous requests from The Ministry of Education to make guest appearances and motivational speeches at various schools throughout the country.

Victim/Offender Mediation

Vision on Mission has hosted many mediation conferences or victim offender dialogue or meetings since its inception.

What is Victim/Offender Mediation?

Victim offender mediation is a process that provides interested victims an opportunity to meet their offender in a safe and structured setting to engage in a mediated discussion of the crime.

With the assistance of a trained mediator, the victim is able to tell the offender about the crime's physical, emotional, and financial impact; to receive answers to lingering questions about the crime and the offender; and to be directly involved in developing a restitution plan for the offender to pay back his or her ‘debt’.

This process is different from mediation as it is practiced in civil or commercial disputes, since the involved parties are not "disputants" nor of similar status – with one an admitted offender and the other the victim. Also, the process is not primarily focused upon reaching a settlement, although most sessions do, in fact, result in a signed restitution agreement. Because of these fundamental differences with standard mediation practices, some programs call the process a victim offender "dialogue," "meeting," or "conference."

Goals

The goals of victim offender mediation include:

  • Support the healing process of victims, by providing a safe and controlled setting for them to meet and speak with the offender on a strictly voluntary basis.
  • Allow the offender to learn about the impact of the crime on the victim and to take direct responsibility for their behavior.
  • Provide an opportunity for the victim and offender to develop a mutually acceptable plan that addresses the harm caused by the crime.
